BLAEU, Joan (1596-1673). Nuevo Altas de los Reynos de Escocia e Yrlanda. [Scotland and Ireland]. Amsterdam: Joannem Blaeu, 1654 [dedication dated 1658]
2° (510 x 310mm) Text in Spanish. Engraved architectural title with letterpress title overslip. 55 engraved maps (48 of Scotland, 6 of Ireland), 54 double-page, most on thick paper, several backed on thin paper, two of the maps (Skye and the Orkneys/Shetlands) neatly trimmed to plate mark and mounted on thick paper. (A few maps browned or discoloured, without the Latin poem and privilege leaf.) Old calf, speckled coloured edges (worn, lacking spine).
An interesting copy of the Scottish Blaeu with fine impressions of the maps, wide margins and on thick paper. This volume has the early title imprint of 1654 predating the accepted date of 1659, and appears to be a variant of Koeman van der Krogt's 2:442Q with only two of the maps pasted on. This Scottish volume indicates the problems of the publication of the Spanish edition of the Atlas Mayor; with its early 1654 title should it be considered a special Spanish edition of the Theatrum vol 5 rather than an early volume of the Atlas Nuevo of 1659-72. Koeman Van der Krogt 2:442Q.
