Lot Essay

Van Thulden was first mentioned as a master on the lists of the Antwerp painters' guild in 1626 and visited France from 1631-33. On his return to Antwerp he became involved with the vast series of decorations erected to celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain into Antwerp, master-minded by Rubens, and he prepared a distinguished album of engravings, Pompa Introitus Ferdinandi. He executed two pictures from Rubens' sketches for the decoration of Philip IV of Spain's hunting lodge, the Torre de la Parada. After his return to 's Hertogenbosch he continued to recieve important official commissions, such as the decoration of Huis ten Bosch, The Hague, for Amalia von Solms, the widow of the Stadholder. On a smaller, less theatrical scale, his religious works are notably expressive.
