An animal painter and copper plate engraver as well as a landscape painter Adrien van Diest moved to England at the age of 18 and began producing views of the West country for the English market. His port scenes and Rhenish landscapes, such as this picture, show the use of his translucent honey coloured palatte to best effect. With these pictures he has been regarded as a precursor of the English landscapist Richard Wilson.
