Lot Essay

Seekatz belonged to the circle of late Rococo painters associated with Goethe's father, Johann von Goethe, in Frankfurt. Indeed, one painting, The Month of May (Goethemuseum, Frankfurt) was praised by Goethe for its innocence. This carefree spirit is echoed in the present picture, a close version of which was sold Sotheby's, New York, 14 January 1994, lot 272 ($26,450).
