The only child of King Gustav II Adolf, Queen Christina of Sweden was trained as a prince and was noted for her intellectual brilliance and her daring independence. She ruled from 1640-1654, before abdicating to her cousin Charles Gustavus, thus enabling her convertion to Catholicism. After her abdication she lived in Rome becoming a distinguished patroness of the arts.
