Lot Essay

The composition is based on the central section of an altarpiece by Carlo Bononi, depicting The dead Christ adored by angels, Saint Sebastian and Saint Bonaventura, painted for the church of Santo Spirito in Reggio Emilia, now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 121).
