Graham--Vintage 1955
Embossed metal capsules, slightly corroded. Signs of seepage. No labels. Levels base of neck
Tasting note: One of my all-time favourite ports. Nearly thirty notes since 1958, seven since 1990. A big wine that has evolved perfectly. A classic in 1991 bottled by Harveys: mature but rosy-cheeked; glorious bouquet, a fabulous fragrance erupting out of its depths. Sweet, refined, silky, yet still tannic, fleshy yet firm. Showing well at a Gidleigh Park port tasting in the mid-1990s, fragrant, almost ethereal, lovely texture. Then a powerful magnum and four bottles in one month, each delectable. I noted the superb black velvet-stained end of one of the corks, the unctuous tears in the glass and the glowingly warm finish. In 1997, with Taylors 55 at a Bacchus Society dinner in Coral Gables, ludicrously served alongside Autumn Pumpkin and Valhrona Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream. Forgetting the mismatch of food I thought I detected a reversal of roles, Graham having a more pronounced character than the Taylor. Most recently, decanted 6.20 pm, fully mature; a light, spicy bouquet that opened up magnificently by 10.30. Still very sweet, delicious flavour, glorious length. Perfection. Will go on. MB.
