THE PROPERTY OF THE LATE LORD WRAXALL OFFERED BY ORDER OF THE EXECUTORS Christie's, the world's leading art auctioneers, have been appointed by the Executors of the 2nd Baron Wraxall to advise on the historic collection of works of art housed at Tyntesfield. A team of Christie's art specialists has been working for three months, carefully drawing together, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of the collection. Seven miles south-west of Bristol, Tyntesfield is one of England's most secret country houses. It is a Victorian palace, and has been unseen by the outside world for nearly a century. Inside the main house of Tyntesfield are over thirty bedrooms, a magnificent drawing room and panelled library with a succession of reception and private rooms all decorated in the most affluent of High Victorian Aesthetic taste. Tyntesfield remains the last great Gothic house in England in the Puginian tradition. The contents and works of art at Tyntesfield encompass the eclectic collecting tradition of several generations of the Gibbs family and reflect their taste and interests. The collection comprises important 19th and early 20th century English and Continental furniture, 18th and 19th century British and Old Master Pictures, Drawings and Watercolours, Japanese and Export Porcelain, European ceramics, English silver, 19th and 20th century sculpture and many other interesting objects and works of art as well as a superb library. As well as the formal rooms which include the library, the drawing room, the day room and the splendid dining room, the family bedrooms, the servants accommodation, the attics, cellars and outbuildings are all in tact. They house a broad range of household effects and objects acquired over the century, from school trunks to childrens books, from everyday Victorian kitchenware to linen and decorative objects - all providing a fascinating glimpse into the day to day life in this extraordinary house. The Executors of the Wraxall Estate and their agents are in contact with the National Trust and discussions are ongoing. At this stage, it is anticipated that if the National Trust proceed with the acquisition of certain key chattels from the estate, it is likely that there will still be a Christie's in-situ house sale in September. The situation will be monitored closely and information released accordingly if the current plans are reviewed.
