Born in 1710, Hauer had become the factory's Malerei Vorsteher by 1739, and he remained at the factory until his death in 1782. Hauer's distinctive style, with the use of dark foreground motifs of rocks, buildings or figures in shadow against extensive land and seascapes with skilful aerial perspectives, can be found on objects decorated by him throughout the 1740's, most particularly on armorial wares, like the present service, for a Venetian client. His pride in his brilliant decoration is evidenced by his signature, which appears on four of the teabowls. While the exact history of the commissioning of this service is not fully known, the following facts and history of the Mocenigo-Cornaro families seem relevant. In 1475, Catherine Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, had accepted Venetian protection against the Turkish threat, creating a historic alliance. Luigi Mocenigo became Doge of Venice in 1570, and waged war against the Turks to regain control of Cyprus. As with many campaigns of war, there were victories as well as defeats, but the most celebrated victory occurred on the 7th of October 1571, when a combined Venetian, Spanish and Papal fleet defeated the Turks at the battle of Lepanto. The ancient and noble families of Cornaro and Mocenigo became joined centuries later when Federico Antonio Alberto Cornaro married Cecilia Mocenigo in 1716. Federico was a man of culture; it was he, with his brother, Andrea, who commissioned Domenico Rossi to rebuild the family palace, the Ca'Cornaro della Regina on the Grand Canal. The Villa Cornaro, a Palladian villa and the family home in Piombino Dese, was also a focus of further artistic embellishment in the 1740's. Federico and Cecilia celebrated twenty-five years of marriage in 1741, which may be when this service was commissioned. It would have been more than appropriate to celebrate the union of their illustrious families with a service decorated with naval battle scenes that referred to their ancient alliance and the historic victory at Lepanto. The later history of the service is somewhat clearer. It was in England by the 19th Century, and by 1868 was in the collection of the Countess of Lichfield at Shugborough as it was exhibited from her collection at Leeds in 1868. It is not known exactly when it left the Lichfield Collection, but by 1953 the service appeared at auction at Galerie Jürg Stuker in Berne. The service has been hidden from public view for almost fifty years. It is probably the last major virtually complete Meissen armorial chocolate, coffee and tea-service in private hands to have survived almost in its entirety. A teabowl and saucer from the service are in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and an 'Augustus Rex' vase formerly part of this service was sold in these Rooms in --------. A saucer from another service with the arms of Mocenigo alone was sold in these rooms on 11th December 2000, lot 297 (this service is not recorded by Dieter Hoffmeister in his catalogue, Katalog der Sammlung Hoffmeister [Hamburg, 1999], Vol. II. pp. 469-473) although the present service is (ibid., Vol. II, p. 671, no. 29). For a discussion of the present lot, see H.E. Backer, 'Ein Meissner Wappenservice von Bonaventura Gottlieb Hauer', in Keramik Freunde der Schweiz, no. 13, July 1949, pp. 11-12. As Backer points out several of the ships fly the flag of Saxony, a landlocked country. The stern of one galleon also bears the crowned arms of Saxony. Opposite: A baluster coffee-pot and cover, the pot with gilt bearded satyr mask spout, the wishbone handle with gilt shell thumbpiece, the body painted with a naval skirmish with a galleon and a boat sinking nearby, the coast with birds encircling ruins and fortified buildings, the domed cover with a continuous scene of merchants by barrels on a shore about a gilt ball finial (slight wear to gilt rim of cover, areas of wear to gilt border below rim)
