Lot Essay

Count Schwerin (1684-1756) was the principal advisor and tactician for Frederick the Great in the First and Second Silesian Wars and during the Seven Years War. A large part of the original table service, probably a gift from the grateful King to his loyal general, was sold in these Rooms on the 11th March 1996, lot 186.

For a discussion of the French-influenced design of these plates, see Gunter Reinheckel, 'Plastiche Decorationsformen im Meissner Porzellan des 18 Jahrhunderts', Keramos, July/October 1968, no. 41/42, pp.103 et. seq.
