A pair of Meissen boat-shaped sauceboats
Circa 1820, each with blue crossed swords mark to a foot
Each with a spout formed as a beast's head with a pierced mouth below a raised crenellated pink prow moulded with white hounds, the front half of each boat with a moulded gilt border with puce and white flowerheads at the base of turquoise flutes, the stepped border at the rear with elaborate dentil ornament supporting an over-hanging section moulded with white signs of the zodiac in rectangular blue gilt-edged panels, the sides of the up-turned sterns similarly moulded and each terminating in an eagle's head, the undersides with gilt-edged moulded ribs, on two shaped block feet (chipping to three feet, some areas of slight wear to gilding)

Lot Essay

Daniela Kumpf exhibited an example of this form in the 1999 International Ceramics Fair in London, illustrated in the Handbook, p. 77. She identified this as perhaps being the Sauciere als Schiff made between 1819 and 1830. A further example in biscuit porcelain was exhibited by Klaber and Klaber at Grosvenor House in 2001 and illustrated in Klaber & Klaber Summer Catalogue 2001, no. 4.
