A Vienna gold-mounted pale turquoise-ground rectangular snuff-box
Circa 1785, the mounts contemporary
Each facet of the exterior with an Italianate view of dilapidated and ruined classical buildings in landscapes with trees, rocks and figures within rectangular yellow and brown narrow reeded cartouches centred at the sides with scrolls and with scroll canted corners, the cartouche on the cover surmounted by a portrait bust, a circular medallion and flanked by oval portrait medallions suspending garlands of husks, the yellow and brown ovolo ornament borders with scrolls at the corners and divided by shells at the top and bottom, the interior of the cover with figures among classical ruins with arches and a large bust of an emperor, one figure reading the inscription on an oval tablet, the mounts chased with scrolls and flowers against a hatched ground below a reeded band with leaves at intervals (small scratch to ground of cover, edge of base with small chip and slight areas of wear to enamels, particularly to corners)
