The make-up of the Grand Vin this year was pretty much identical to how the vineyard is planted: 48 Merlot, 46 Cabernet Sauvingon, 6 Petit Verdot. Impressively deep purple, with finely spicy, cpmplex aromas. The start is full, the middle passage charming and supple, the finish somewhat pinched by tannins, and as yet (tasted from barrel March 2000) without the peacock's tail of long-lingering flavours to be hoped for of Palmer in a good vintage. But give Palmer sufficient bottle-age and it regularly astonishes me, so my conclusion is: Be patient. AH
