A George I blue japanned longcase clock, circa 1715
The case decorated overall with gilt floral and chinoiserie motifs, with stepped top hood and inset columns, glazed side panels, the rectangular trunk door embellished with chinoiserie figures and pagodas, with moulded frame and glass lenticle, the plinth also decorated with a pagoda and on stepped base, the 12in. square brass dial with Indian head and foliate spandrels to a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring signed IOHN EWER LONDON, with fleur-de-lys half hour and lozenge half quarter hour markers, matted centre with subsidiary silvered seconds ring, its centre engraved with star design, ringed winding holes, engraved with birds and a basket of fruit around the date aperture, hands later black painted, the four ringed pillar (formerly five) movement with anchor escapement and countwheel strike on bell -- 88in. (224cm.) high
