A Confederate twenty dollar note numbered 10354 and dated February 17, 1864, the year Scarlett O'Hara would have been nineteen years old. Black fountain-pen ink signatures of the regristrar and treasurer appear on the lower margin as does The Confederate States of America will pay twenty dollars to the bearer on demand. Margaret Mitchell often mentions Confererate bills throughout her novel, most specifically when Will Benteen reads the poem titled 'Lines on the Back of a Confederate Note' in Chapter Thirty. After the poem is read, Melanie responds "Oh, how beautiful! How touching...it's (the Confederate bill) more than paper -- just like this poem said: 'The pledge of a nation that's passed away!'"
