Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Mina Gregori who, on the basis of photographs, suggests an attribution to Giovanni Battista Moroni (Albino 1520/4-after 1578), who was trained in the workshop of Moretto; she dates the picture to circa 1548-50. Both in style and composition this painting recalls Moretto's painting of the same subject which Professor Mina Gregori dates in the early 1520s (catalogue of the exhibition, Alessandro Bonvicino, Il Moretto, Brescia, Monastero di S. Giulia, 18 June-20 November 1988, no. 6).
