A Model of the Cutter DILIGENCE

The hull of the model built up from the solid with tan painted topsides, an off-white bottom a black waterline and other painted details. The deck of the model is scored basswood which has been stained a cherry color. The deck of the model is fitted with numerous details including: anchors, anchor windlass, deck gratings, stove pipe, pin and fife rails, dory lashed to deck, skylight, bilge pumps, companionway, tiller, twelve cannons mounted on carriages, and other details. The model is very well rigged with a single mast, standing and running rigging, turning blocks, stun'sail booms, etc. The model is displayed in plexiglass and oak display case with a brass plate which reads:"HMS DILIGENCE/CHANNEL REVENUE CUTTER/Early 19th C. 3/16"=1 Foot/BY E.A.R. RONNBERG, SR."
29 x 14 7/8 x 24 5/8 in. (73.6 x 37.7 x 62.5 cm.) cased dimensions.

Lot Essay

Diligence was a English Channel Cutter built in England ca.1810. In 1817 her design was the basis of the "snipe" class of revenue cutters from which six other ships were built from 1818 to 1820. Manned by a Royal Navy lieutenant and a crew of ex-smugglers, these cutters were used on regular patrol in the English Channel. The original plans for this model were re-drawn by Chapelle in 1931, from original Admiralty drafts for the Rhode Island Ship Model Society magazine "Mariner", however, the plans were never published in any of Chapelle's books.
