Lot Essay

Determined to win the Americas Cup, Lord Dunraven gave carte blanche to George L. Watson to design the Valkyrie III as a challenger in the Americas Cup in 1895 against Defender. Unfortunately, Defender triumphed over Valkyrie III, much to the dismay of Lord Dunraven. She had wide beams, full lines, and composite construction. Her principle dimensions were 129 LOA, 26 Beam, and a displacement of 166.9 tons.
