Frank Rowell (1832-1900), sometimes seen in Boston partnerships, Miller & Rowell as well as Allen (E.L.) & Rowell, was a successful photographer and inventor. This print is a rarely seen "carbon photo", a process he first introduced in 1867, by which paper was treated so that the printed photograph, in Rowells words, "will hereafter be as permanent as the engravings which adorn the walls of our dwellings." Whereas the process was not a great financial success, this image attests to its long term effectiveness.
