Crest of the Wave was built at Thomaston, Maine, in 1854 especially for the Australian Gold Rush. In 1861 her owner, M.R. Ludwig of Baltimore, was accused of being a rebel and the vessel was confiscated by the United States Government. Jones & Co. also based in Baltimore purchased her in 1863.
Under the command of Captain Woodburn, Crest of the Wave, arrived at Valparaiso on 6 November 1864 from Acapulco. During the voyage: 'the captian's wife, the mate, Mr Heaps, and 13 of the crew had died of yellow fever' (Howe and Matthews, American Clipper Ships). The captain and six of his crew survived. Her last voyage this time under the command of Captian Jones was in 1870. Sailing from Liverpool to Baltimore Crest of the Wave encountered a gale and struck Wreck Island, 15 miles north of Cape Charles. All hands were lost.
