Director, screenwriter and producer, he dominated Hollywood throughout the decades of the 1930s through to the early 1960s. Born near Vienna in 1906 he later worked as a Journalist then screenwriter in Berlin before the rise of the Nazis forced him to leave for Paris in 1933 and then Hollywood a year later. His legendary Hollywood career included films such as Double Indemnity (1944), Sunset Boulevard (1950), The Seven Year Itch (1955), Some Like it Hot (1959) and The Apartment (1960), winning him twenty-one Academy Award nominations and six Oscars. During his long career he worked with the greatest of Hollywood's stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Shirley McLane and Jack Lemmon. With a wide interest in the arts his varied collections included pictures encompassing the major trends on 20th Century art with works by Renoir, Picasso, Balthus, Hockney, Schiele, Botero and Calder. His African Art collection was equally diverse with objects spanning the continent from West Africa to the Congo and from an early Benin bronze plaque to a 20th Century colonial carving by Thomas Ona which we are very pleased to be offering in the following lots.
