1949 CHRYSLER FOUR DOOR SEDAN

Chassis No. 7103708

Beige with beige cloth interior

Engine: straight eight, 323.5ci, 135bhp at 3,200 rpm; Gearbox: fluid drive semi-automatic; Suspension: front, independent, rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic drum. Left hand drive.

The 1949 Chrysler featured the first post-war all new styling change: the well-known simplified egg-crate grill. The bodies also appeared taller and boxier than before. The new cars were definitely wider than their predecessors and had a little more glass area. The advertising theme was, "bigger on the inside, smaller on the outside". An interesting styling note is the wraparound rear bumper, which fits neatly into a recess in the rear fender. Mechanically there was little change from 1948. Both Chrysler models had higher compression, but though the six was up to 116bhp, the eight remained at 135bhp. Fluid drive now required no use of the clutch except to downshift or to enter reverse, and was renamed 'Prestomatic'. This made it sound more modern in the showrooms, where the transmission was meeting stiff competition from Hydra-Matic and Dynaflow. Four series were offered; the Royal and Windsor series were fitted with six cylinder engines and the Saratoga and New Yorker series had eight cylinder engines. The top of the range was the high-line New Yorker series and the four-door sedan was by far the most highly produced model.

This particular eight cylinder four-door sedan was purchased by the current owner from a taxi cab company in San Diego. The cab company had bought the car from the original owner with the intention of using it in parades to promote their business. Following a sympathetic restoration over a two year period, this car is offered in good condition. It has been repainted in a period beige color, reupholstered, and fitted with a new headlining. Although we have not had the opportunity to drive the car, we are informed that it drives well.
