Lot Essay

After the pricipal figures in Albani's Reclining Venus with Cupids of circa 1645-50 in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome (no. 232). They in turn are taken from the Venus at the Forge of Vulcan, one of the cycle of pictures commissioned from Albani in 1621 by Ferdinando Gonzaga for the Villa Favorita, Mantua, and now in the Louvre, Paris (nos. 9-12).
