The prototype, on panel and measuring 45.6 x 36.5 cm., is in the Boijmans-Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam; several versions are known, but the only likely autograph version is in horizontal format (present location unknown, see F. Lammertse, et al., Dutch Genre Paintings of the 17th Century. Collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, 1998, p. 176, fig. 1). Traditionally dated to Steen's Delft period, circa 1655, the Rotterdam painting is in fact more likely a late work of 1670-5.
