Lot Essay

We are grateful to Ludwig Meyer for noting that the present lot can be dated to circa 1510/5 and must have been made in Nuremberg. He compares it with Traut's wings of the High Altar of the Church of Saint John in Nuremberg, painted in circa 1511/2 (see P. Strieder, Tafelmalerei in Nürnberg 1350-1550, 1993, pp. 147-8, illustrated), and regards it as a studio work, perhaps by the same anonymous hand as that responsible for the Saint Martha Altarpiece in the Church of Saint Laurence, Nuremberg (see bid, p. 276, illustrated).
