Lot Essay

After the picture in the Prado, Madrid, formerly regarded as a work of Agostino Carracci (see A. Brogi, Ludovico Carracci, Bologna, 2001, I, pp. 188-9, no. 75; II, fig. 167). The subject refers to the forgiveness promised to Saint Francis, in a vision of Christ and the Virgin, for those who repent of their sins at the Chapel at Porziuncola, an Indulgence that was confirmed by Pope Honorius III in 1216.
