Lot Essay
The Hekla was built in 1884 by Scott & Co, at Greenock to replace her namesake, which had sunk in 1883. She was an iron construction, had one funnel and three masts. Her captain, named Thomsen, was appointed to the shipping line 'Thingvalla' in 1881 and to the ship in 1885. She was launched on 29th February 1884. She departed on her maiden voyage from Copenhagen to New York on the 14th of May. In 1898 she was taken over by the Scandinavian America Line and sold in 1905 and again in 1909 to Russian owners who renamed it 'Minsk'. She was taken out of commission in 1910.
