Lot Essay

The subject of this piece is unknown, however the work is believed to be painted in 1902 shortly after Ramsay's return to Australia from Europe, were he had been studying the old masters as well as the work of his contemporaries. This piece derives strong influence from Sargent, with it's relaxed brushwork. The subject is also comparable, as Sargent had painted Girl with a Fan in circa 1875. The small scale of the canvas is unusual for Ramsay but successful, and the Japanese style fan is a charming reminder of the artist recently acquired worldliness
