In 1906 Macpherson was sharing a studio apartment in the Latin Quarter of Paris with fellow Australian artist Bessie Davidson. It is known that from the window of the studio the artist could see the gardens of a monastery, which has been tentatively identified as what is now the Musie Cluny. The colour-illustrated magazine that the reclining model reads is similar to publications for which McPherson produced illustrations during her time in Europe.
When McPherson returned to Australia at the end of 1906, she brought this painting with her, and it was included in two exhibitions held in Adelaide the following year.
