The urn-capped Roman 'arca' or sarcophagus of 'Grecian'-black ebony is inspired by the celebrated 'tomb of Agrippa' of the Pantheon, and appropriate for an inkstand, it incorporates a tablet evoking the poets' paradise and bearing the cult phrase of the 18th Century elegiac tradition, which was translated as 'I too [the inhabitant of the tomb], was once in Arcady'.

A related sacrophagus-inkstand, executed in engraved brass, amboyna and ebony, was exhibited by Randolph at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair, June 1991.
