A CHINESE-EXPORT BLACK AND GILT-LACQUER COFFER-ON-STAND
Mid-18th Century
Decorated on all four sides and top with scenes of Chinese landscapes and pavilions, the rectangular moulded hinged top enclosing a plain black-lacquered interior, on a stand with cabriole legs and paw feet with ebonised countersunk brass castors, the stand reconstructed with mahogany frame with ebony ears and legs, areas of restoration to the decoration

Lot Essay

A similar lacquer chest imported by the East India Company in the early 18th Century was formerly at Kimbolton Castle, Hunts. (R. Edwards, The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1977, p. 195, fig. 29). A similar lion-footed stand supports a leather chest acquired in 1983 by the Victoria & Albert Museum (museum number W.46).
