The chair, with Egyptian leopard monopodia, Grecian palm-flowered tablet and Roman bronze colouring is designed in the 'antique' fashion promoted by Thomas Hope's Duchess Street mansion/museum and his guide Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807; and by George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808. Related tablets and Grecian-scrolled and lion-pawed legs featured on library chairs and bergères supplied in 1806 for Weston Park, Staffordshire, by the Marlborough Street firm of Morel and Hughes (P. Rogers, 'The Remodelling of Weston Park', Furniture History, 1987, figs. 3 and 4).
