The table's elliptic frieze is antique-fluted and inlaid with scalloped paterae, while its fluted columnar legs are wrapped by palms in a fashion introduced in the 1760s. Similar legs, including the hollowed capitals, featured on a sideboard-table designed in 1772 by the architect Robert Adam (d. 1792) for 20 St. James's Square; and on chairs supplied by James Cullen in 1773 for Northumberland House, London (O. Bracket, An Encyclopaedia of English Furniture, London, 1927, p. 255; and C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, fig. 267). A related card-table, with carved sunflower paterae, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 7 June 1979, lot 25.
