Lot Essay

The Library cabinet, with fine marble-figured veneer, is embellished with a golden frieze of flowered ribbon-guilloche; while its palm-and -acanthus-wrapped Roman trusses terminate in bacchic lion-paws. Its 'antique' or 'Old French' style was popularised by Thomas King's, Specimens of Furniture in the Elizabethan and Louis Quatorze Styles, 1835; and by Henry Whitaker's, The Practical Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Treasury of Designs, 1847.
