The bas-relief cast scene depicting groups of wrestling men about a centralised mask surmounted by conforming reclining satyrs each clasping a writhen serpent, and flanked by two club bearing opposing figures with a frog beneath, signed to the side F.LEVILLAIN -- 4½in. (11.5cm.) high, 12in. (30.5cm.) diameter

Designed by Ferdinand LeVillain (1837-1905), who studied under Jouffroy and proceeded to win a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, and later became a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. His talent and reputation were gained by the sculpting of numerous historical bas-reliefs, plaques and medallions.
