Lot Essay

Caroline of Brunswick was the estranged wife of George, Prince of Wales, married in 1795. However, Caroline's disposition repelled the Prince and subsquently she was swiftly spurned. In 1814 she took off to Europe to gain a disreputable reputation, dancing naked to the waist in Geneva and having an affair with King Joachim of Naples. She returned upon the death of George III to claim her title, but despite her popularity with the London mob she was banned from the coronation and 19 days later she died as the injured Queen of England.
