Lot Essay

David Garrick (1717-1779) was the most pre-eminent actor-manager during the Georgian peroid. His talent was recognised and supported by Samuel Johnson, who travelled with Garrick to London in 1737, and by 1749 he was the co-manager of the Drury Lane theatre.
