In 1758 General Abercromby (1747-1792) led an army of 15,390 troops to besiege the naturally defended French Fort Carillon, renamed by the British, Fort Ticonderoga. The 42nd. Highlanders or Black Watch suffered greatly. Abercromby lost roughly 2000 men, whereas the French commander, Montcalm, lost 400. The intrepid bavery of the Highlanders was much regarded in Britian, and George II issued a warrant conferring the title of Royal to the regiment.
