AN INCREDIBLE BURGUNDY LEGEND

RICHEBOURG 1978, HENRI JAYER

This is a wine of exceptional - indeed jaw-dropping - rarity and beauty : 12 bottles of Henri Jayer's 1978 Richebourg, which have never previously been moved from the cellar of the Domaine in Vosne-Romanée.

Before parting with these bottles to our client in March 2002, Monsieur Jayer had carefully checked each bottle, then re-conditioned and re-corked it (the corks branded with vintage, appellation and Domaine).

The 1978 Vintage in Burgundy
Although the flowering was uncertain and high summer weather disappointing, a magnificent autumn transformed the vintage into one of the best of the century. The wines are perfectly balanced, with sufficient acidity to have ensured superb ageing, elegant harmony and ripe tannins, thanks to great weather during the picking.

The Richebourg vineyard
Wines from the Richebourg vineyard have no equal in Burgundy for their combination of powerful structure, complex, fleshy texture, and substantial, spicy aftertaste. They are rich wines, as the name implies, with extraordinarily velvet finish. The aromas of Richebourg can evoke the earth, roasted black fruits, violets.

Henri Jayer has gone on record for his special admiration of this vintage (though with his habitual modesty in his own achievement). "Pinot Noir likes the sun, but not too much of it. Our temperate climate suits Pinot well In 1978 there was not a lot of sunshine in full summer, but the late season was exceptional. One was therefore able to make an excellent vintage." These wines are "precious bottles for one's retirement and one's grand-children." Of their drinkability, he has said "although drinking magnificently today, let us store these bottles away carefully" (quotations from Henri Jayer Vigneron à Vosne-Romanée, by Jacky Rigaux, Editions de l'Armançon 1997).

The Henri Jayer style
Henri Jayer's are very refined wines, with all elements being harmoniously integrated and the power being evident in the length of flavour. Fruit and fragrance are lovely, with subtle bouquet, the silkiest of textures and extraordinary length and complexity on the finish.
