Lot Essay

Vincent Chevalier (1771-1841) was instrumental in bringing together Louis Daguerre and Nicéphore Niépce in 1829 who entered into partnership to develop a permanent chemical method of recording images. Chevalier and his son Charles remained in contact with Daguerre and with the 1839 announcement of the daguerreotype process the firm was asked to make a lens for the Giroux daguerreotype camera.
