Lot Essay

Isabella Chicheley was the daughter of Admiral Sir John Lawson (D.1665) who served as a Parliamentarian during the Civil war as commander of the ship Covenant of Hull. After the restoration he became Commander-in-chief and was Vice-Admiral of the Fleet. Isabella married Admiral Sir John Chicheley who became Master General of the Ordnance in 1674.
Although no prototype for the present picture is recorded Sir Peter Lely painted both Sir John Lawson and Sir John Chicheley.
