Lot Essay

West Ogwell house belonged to the Reynalls, a powerful west country family in the 15th and 16th Centuries. Sir Richard Reynall (D.1633) held office in the Exchequer and amassed a considerable fortune. King Charles I and the Duke of Buckingham lodged with him at his newly built mansion at Ford in 1625 after which he was knighted. He married Lucy, daughter of Robert Brandon, chamberlain of the City of London.
