Lot Essay

Mathew Boulton first exploited a technique which is believed to have been based on tracing the outline of an original picture onto a silk screen on which oil paint is applied and then transfered to a fresh canvas. De loutherbourg, among other artists, worked with Boulton in the 1770's but the venture lasted only for four years possibly due to the uneconomic hand finishing the pictures required.
The Poliograph Society, founded by Mr. Joseph Booth, revived this 'mechanical' process and in 1784 held its first exhibition in which de Loutherbourg exhibited two pictures 'winter' and the companion 'Summer'.
