There is no record of Grimshaw ever visiting Australia, indeed it is only known that he left the country once for a visit to France. It is thought he worked this picture up from a photographic base, a practice he frequently employed.
Melbourne was built on the wealth of the gold rush. Swanston Street is a major thoroughfare in the city centre, running north from Finders Street Station on the Yarrow River. It includes St Paul's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic revivalist architecture, built between 1877 and 1891; the Young and Jackson Hotel, built in 1853 and bought in 1875 by two Irish prospectors; the Town Hall, built betwen 1870 and 1880 and the State Library built from 1854.
