Lot Essay

There is no record of Grimshaw ever visiting Australia, indeed it is only known that he left the country once for a visit to France. It is thought he worked this picture up from a photographic base, a practice he frequently employed.
Melbourne was built on the wealth of the gold rush. Swanston Street is a major thoroughfare in the city centre, running north from Finders Street Station on the Yarrow River. It includes St Paul's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic revivalist architecture, built between 1877 and 1891; the Young and Jackson Hotel, built in 1853 and bought in 1875 by two Irish prospectors; the Town Hall, built betwen 1870 and 1880 and the State Library built from 1854.
We are grateful to Alexander Robertson, Curator, Leeds City Art Gallery, for his help in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
