Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the present work was inspired by Horace Walpole's book The Castle of Otranto (1758). In this early gothic novel, a large enchanted helmet becomes the symbolic focus of the text, and mysteriously crushes to death Conrad, the son of Manfred, Prince of Otranto. The female figure in the painting may be his sister Matilda, or his betrothed, Isabella, the Marquis of Vicenza'a daughter.
