A Boar's Tusk Netsuke**
Edo period (19th century), with inscription Iwami kuni Kaaigawa Seiyodo Bunshojo chokoku koko ni toki Bunsei tsuchinoto ushi [Carved by Seiyodo Bunsho of Iwami province (by the) Kaai River. The time now is the twelfth year of the Bunsei era (1829)], final line of inscription now illegible
Carved with a spider in high relief and ferns incised and stained black, the himotoshi a single hole on the underside

Lot Essay

Seiyodo Bunshojo (1764-1838) was the eldest daughter of the carver Tomiharu (1733-1811). Like her father, Seiyodo is reputed to have excelled not only at carving but also at writing Haiku poetry.
