A Stoneware Food Container for Tea Ceremony (Mukozuke)
Kameya no tani ware, E-Karatsu type, Edo period (17th century)
Set on a ring foot and molded with a shallow well, the sides turned up and pinched into four corners and decorated in underglaze brown iron-oxide with a freely-painted design of grasses, the sides painted with simple Chinese-style scrolling grasses, the edge also glazed in brown iron-oxide showing reddish-brown where it has burned through the overglaze, covered in a milky feldspathic glaze with a slight crackle running thickly around the edges of the rim; foot and area around it unglazed; glaze pulls where the glaze ends
