A Composite Suit of Armor
Edo period (18th-19th century)
Comprising an eight-plate sujibachi (helmet), each ridge with shinodare (ornamental strip) in gold and black lacquer and fitted with a gilt-bronze four-stage tehen kanamono, the five-lame shikoro (neck guard) lacquered black and close-laced in blue, the maedate (forecrest) a large ring lacquered gold, the menpo (face mask) forged with a detachable nose, lacquered russet with the teeth gilt-copper and applied with a moustache of boar's hair; the solid cuirass of vertical plates lacquered black fastened with four hinges and close-laced in blue with false lamellae at the bottom, fitted with leather kusazari (tassets) lacquered black; with kosode (small shoulder pads), tsutsugote (tubular sleeves), haidate (thigh guards) and tsutsu suneate (shin guards) laced to match; wood storage box
