Lot Essay

Rodin's interest in modeling parts of the body as complete works was a practice that the artist began during his years as a student at the Petite Ecole. In later years, the fragments of hands, feet, and torsos would remain important building blocks for the more elaborate designs for monuments and other public commissions (A. Elsen, Rodin, Paris, 1963, p. 174-175).
