Circa 1880, one signed Lebrun
The dark blue-ground ovoid body heavily gilt with scrolling foliage surrounding a frontal scene, one depicting Louis XIV dressed as Alexander the Great patronising Architecture, Trade, Pictural art and Sciences, further with an armour clad warrior holding a map, a lady holding a caduceus, a girl with a painter's palette and another one holding dividers and a globe, the other with Louis XIV dressed as the above and as a patron of Good Government, further with a winged angel of peace, a young mother holding her two newborn to her breast and Minerva holding an olive branch, all underneath an escutcheon with a coat of arms containing a cross reminiscent of the house of Savoie, the reverse with dreamy pastoral landscapes, the waisted neck and base scattered with fleurs-de-lys motifs, mounted with handles as female mascaroons upholding scrolling foliage handles, and on quadrupod heavy base

Lot Essay

Lebrun referring to Charles Lebrun, French historical painter (1619-1690). He was introduced to Louis XIV by Cardinal Mazarin and speedily became a very popular person at Court and held almost unlimited sway over all artistic matters in Versailles. He was responsible for a long series of allegorical paintings or Apothéoses recalling Alexander the Great but related to Louis XIV, the famous Roi Soleil
The coat of arms reminiscent of Victor Emmanuel II (1820-1878) King of Sardinia 1849 and first King of Italy 1861
